Research Structure

Research at BIAD is organised under the two centres, but is also supported and developed in further ways:

  • The role of art and design is promoted within the community, and common issues such as the environment are factored into activities.
  • The scholarly infrastructure supports research, namely through the use of collections such as BIAD Archives and spaces such as the gallery at the International Project Space.
  • The BIAD Research Committee’s entrepreneurial approach connects research to developments in art and design and emerging disciplines, often in collaboration with external partners.
  • Joint research programmes and projects with industry are regularly undertaken. BIAD has completed 12 Teaching Company Scheme and Knowledge Transfer Partnership Projects in design, producing four associated PhDs.
  • Associated fellowships and studentships have been developed with other universities and external business / industry partners.

Research is physically applied to and situated within various wider contexts:

  • Research at BIAD aims to develop an infrastructure for art and design research focussed on Birmingham and the West Midlands.
  • Five specific major projects contribute to regional and national research.
  • Relationships are established with research users, including business, industry, museums and public bodies.
  • Research opportunities are created and research delivered within our research centres, partnerships, affiliations, performances, training, exhibitions, conferences and symposia.
  • Interdisciplinary and collaborative research is undertaken across the university, e.g. BIAD’s involvement in the Birmingham City University pervasive computing group.
Government policy, initiative and objectives are taken into account.
