The Visual Legacy of the Chinese Cultural Revolution in Contemporary Art (AHRB funded)

This research will use a particular perspective to examine the visual legacy of the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). The development of Chinese contemporary art practice, where artists largely appropriate the visual images of the Cultural Revolution, will be set as a mirror to reflect and revalue the significance of the visual impact of the Cultural Revolution. Twenty artists will be interviewed and their relevant works will be documented and analysed during the project. In May 2004 Birmingham Institute of Art and Design will host a symposium to present the outcomes of this study.
