The photography of Drum, and its legacy in the visual culture of post-apartheid South Africa (AHRB funded)

Drum magazine, first published in 1951, has become an important point of reference for South African photography, and for documentary photography internationally. Yet, despite the frequency with which this work is referred to, it has been subject to little in the way of critical and in-depth study. The aim of this project is to provide a critical assessment of the photography published in Drum magazine in its first period (1951-1965), and to consider the significance of this work now, for South African photography in the post-apartheid era.
