Design Capacity and Capability

This research studentship will examine the capability of organisations within the UK furniture manufacturing sector, to maintain and develop knowledge about design and model this through specific theories and case study development. The project will study the functional decomposition of knowledge by design professionals in firms, together with the mapping of total knowledge resources within the firm associated with new product development. Key areas of consideration will include the nature of design knowledge, design interrelationships and networks, and the possible amalgamation of knowledge management systems and design agency.

Linked to the Centre for High Value Added Products, funded by both ERDF and regional grants, it is expected that a transferable capability assessment model will lead to the development of an assessment tool, which potentially could be applied to a variety of industries.
