The Artist Teacher Scheme aims to encourage teachers to develop their artistic and theoretical practice. The Midlands Artist Teacher Scheme consists of a two-stage course which takes advantage of the innovative artistic and interpretative programme of the Ikon Gallery and the academic excellent of the Fine Art Department of the Birmingham City University.
Stage 1 held 19th -23 July 2004 and consisted of five days of intensive studio practice, seminars and gallery visits delivered by members of academic staff at BIAD, Birmingham City University
Studio practice sessions, in which participants will make new work, are complemented by a series of seminars which will investigate different aspects of contemporary art such as modernism and post modernism, critical theory, cross cultural influences and the politics of gender and sexuality and the impact of new technologies on art practice.
Stage 1 can be undertaken as a stand-alone course or as the introductory component of a further eight Saturday School sessions (Stage 2).
Stage 2 runs from September 2004 - July 2005, during which students will take part in eight full-day Saturday workshops/lectures (on average one a month). These Saturday Schools will focus on enabling participants to develop a body of new work. The sessions will include opportunities to develop practical skills in a number of areas through working with artists facilitators, Ikon and BIAD, Birmingham City University staff: discussion guidance and critiques of individuals' practice: a guided visit to a regional gallery.
Stage 2 culminates in an exhibition of work at Ikon Gallery, where participants wok with Ikon staff to curate a show of their work which will open to the public on Saturday 25th July 2005.
