Applied Research and Knowledge Transfer

This two year research project aims to establish the relationship between Applied Research and Knowledge Transfer. The project team consists of Professor Bob Jerrard and one research assistant, Isla Johnstone. Birmingham City University is committed to transferring design knowledge to many organisations, companies and institutions. At BIAD these include creative and cultural industries through KTP’s, and a range of ‘3rd stream’ funded projects which aim to strengthen the relationship between HE and the business sector. This project includes an investigation of collaborative knowledge development, its transfer and retention by the University. Evaluation of knowledge transfer potentially relates to the development of sustainable processes, retaining performance knowledge and enriching current research environments. Within the BIAD research strategy this will entail broadening views of both KT evaluation and process as well as and developing innovative techniques for the retention of knowledge transfer. The research includes ongoing investigation and recording of social and economic changes within knowledge transfer projects, for example through ‘living archiving’. This in turn means considering new desegregation of knowledge archives and new reflections on experiential knowledge, all essential in the development of research resources and research reputations. Several other methodologies will be utilised which could not only capture the ‘stuff of interventions’ but also develop research sustainability.

The academic study will involve;

  • A survey of best practice in a variety of disciplines,
  • Selected project leader interviews
  • Reviews of knowledge transfer policy in the arts, design and a variety of other disciplines
  • The development of research practice which enables knowledge capture and its ongoing use within the university.

This project will make a significant contribution to the University’s capacity to manage and retain knowledge and further develop its collaborative capabilities.
