Museums and Archives Research draws together researchers in Birmingham Institute of Art and Design and elsewhere whose backgrounds and disciplines are very diverse, but whose interests converge in the study of museological and archival issues in the broadest sense. Our aims are:
- To focus on issues surrounding museums and archives: gathering and showing material, its care, maintenance, organisation, interpretation, promotion and dissemination.
- A particular aim is the application of the new technologies to museums, exhibitions and archives. This includes: the creation of virtual displays; digitisation of archives; creation of databases and electronic user-friendly catalogues. These developments make possible easier access to exhibitions outside the gallery and museum context. The production and evaluation of electronic products.
- To build on close links with museums, archives and groups with similar aspirations. This particularly includes the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and other West Midlands museums and galleries but also collections elsewhere in Britain and the World.
- To establish an international reputation for the group and its members through the organization of and participation in conferences, a range of scholarly publications and international visits and contacts.
