ba (hons) design management strategies
Introduction to the course
Graduates are increasingly involved in the
business of design rather than solely the
practice of it. Designers often possess the
relevant product development skills, but if you
are specifically attracted to the management
of design you will require additional skills and
knowledge. The course teaches these, exploring
the contribution design makes to the growth and
sustainability of design-based businesses.
You will study a rich combination of experiences in
design knowledge and the strategic management
of design-related business, enabling you to
progress to the design management profession.
The course culminates in an extended personally
determined project, in which the role of design
in a chosen collaborator company is analysed in
comparison with its competitors.
The course is part of the Design Studies
Programme and shares modules with
Product Design, Interior Design and Interior
Products Design. Links with these subject areas
enable you to explore a variety of design areas
in a holistic context while also widening your
career prospects.
Your learning experience
Learning is primarily project based and
supported by lectures, seminars and specialist
workshops. These will ensure that you learn
to appreciate and understand all aspects of
the design process and its relation to strategic
management, and are aware of the commercial,
cultural and technological context within which
the subject operates. This aspect of
your learning is also supported by the
programme’s direct engagement with design
in business which has previously resulted in
successful live projects.
You will be working mainly within our studios,
workshops and computer facilities, supported
by access to our generic learning resources.
The projects you undertake will be delivered
by a team of staff who are well-versed in and
connected to design management and are able
to develop not only an understanding of your
specialist subject but can also encourage the
acquisition of transferable, intellectual and
personal skills appropriate to the changing
work environment.
Throughout the programme there is the
opportunity to study overseas and engage with
regular study trips, which will provide you with
the ability to evaluate and assess the design field
in greater depth.
Career prospects
Graduates will be qualified for such roles as
freelance advisor, or as part of the business
development section of a commercial enterprise
in the UK or internationally. On successful
completion of the course you may also wish to
work as part of a project team within a design
consultancy as a project manager, accounts
manager or strategic planner. Related fields
include design education, design journalism,
design research and the management of design
management issues related to sustainability.
