Creative Self Development Courses

PART-TIME VARIOUS
SCHOOL OF ART, BOURNVILLE

Getting started - what will I need?
You will need to have taken a Foundation Studies (Art and Design) course, or equivalent, before joining the Art Club. No formal qualifications are required for the other courses but you should be motivated and demonstrate an interest in the subject you wish to pursue. Whilst largely for adults of all ages with some experience, there are a few opportunities for beginners.

Tell me more...
Part of the University’s commitment to life-long learning, these classes enable you to explore your particular interest and build on existing skills. The focus is on learning through creative practice – for its own sake and without the constraints of studying for an award.

What will I study?
Emphasis is on the enjoyment of developing as an artist in the company of others. Expert tuition and guidance is available and there is the opportunity to explore media other than painting. You will be encouraged to discuss your work with other students and participate in exhibitions.

Art Club
The class enables you to explore and become proficient in a wide variety of approaches to painting and drawing. It is suited to the needs of beginners and those with more experience. There are no examinations.

Ceramics
The key aspects of ceramics are covered – types and preparation of clay, building, modelling, throwing and moulding shapes, glazing, decorating and firing. You will be encouraged to explore different approaches and discuss examples of historical and contemporary ceramics. Expert tuition and guidance enables you to produce high quality ceramics

Life-drawing
Instruction is provided in a wide variety of media within the classic traditions of drawing the human figure from life. Reference is made to the work of many artists and you will be encouraged to discuss and try different approaches. Expert tuition and guidance is provided and you will have the opportunity to share your ideas with other enthusiasts.

Digital Photography
This course offers the opportunity to explore and become proficient in the skills of Digital Photography and the use of Photoshop. Course content includes use of the camera, studio photography, portraiture, urban landscapes, capture of images, file transfer, digital manipulation and printing. This course will require you to produce your own work at all times, both at college and in your own time. You will research contemporary artists and photographers and relate that to your own work. This course is suitable for both novices and students with more subject experience.

Creative Crafts Ceramics
The courses are for beginners as well as more experienced ceramicists and offer the opportunity to learn skills in traditional throwing and hand building as and also glazing and firing. There are opportunities to work both traditionally and in creative sculptural ways. The courses are tutored by practicing experienced ceramicists and access high quality facilities for throwing, making, glazing and firing. The courses are available on Monday Wednesday and Fridays during term times and offer an informal learning environment in which to develop at your own pace

Creative Techniques Figure Drawing and Painting
The course is for beginners and more experienced artists, enabling you to explore the use of a variety of media and techniques in figure drawing. There are opportunities to work traditionally and experimentally with the figure. The course is tutored by practicing artists in pleasant, well equipped studios. The atmosphere is informal with the chance to develop at your own pace.

How is my work assessed?
These classes focus on the joy of creative practice in the visual arts and there is no formal assessment. You will be guided by your tutor in continuously evaluating what you create as a natural part of development through learning.

Can I study further?
Whilst these classes are not intended as preparatory, they may help you progress to one of our undergraduate programmes.

What are my employability prospects?
Again, these classes are intended as learning experiences in their own right but they may enhance your employability by developing new or existing skills
